The Best Gift a Sister Could Give

by Kristine Ripley

What would you do if you were an 11-year-old girl and your 8-year-old brother began to choke? If you were like Lindsay Carroll, you would know exactly what to do.

Lindsay's brother, Michael Carroll, was throwing dry cereal in the air and trying to catch it in his mouth when the unthinkable happened--it landed just the wrong way and lodged in his throat. A couple of weeks earlier, Lindsay had taken the American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Course. She put what she learned there into action. Lindsay performed abdominal thrusts until Michael coughed up the cereal that was blocking his airway. Thanks to Lindsay, Michael is alive and well today.

Lindsay has been awarded the American Red Cross Certificate of Merit for her heroic actions. This is the highest award given by the American Red Cross to individuals who save or sustain a life using skills they learned in an American Red Cross Health and Safety Course.

Pet First Aid

Dogs and cats are more than pets - they're family. And just like any other member of the family, pets deserve to be cared for and protected. The American Red Cross has developed Dog First Aid and Cat First Aid, comprehensive guides that include everything owners need to know to keep their pets healthy and safe. From basic pet owner responsibilities, like spaying, neutering, and administering medications to managing breathing and cardiac emergencies and preparing for disasters, these guides offer information and advice pet owners can trust. It includes an easy to use first aid reference guide and a dvd that shows - step by step - how to manage a variety of urgent care situations, including car accidents, wounds, electrical shock, and eye, foot and ear injuries. These guides are available as stand-alone purchases or as a part of our Dog First Aid class, a 2-1/2 hour session that provides hands-on training for some of the issues address in the book.
