IMPORTANT: You must be able to get on the floor to perform the unconscious victim check to receive training certification. If you are unable to do this, you may still attend the class and participate at your comfort level. This is called Audit. The cost of the training is free for those who choose to audit. There is a fee for the training books and manuals.
Additional Courses: CPR/AED for the Healthcare Provider (Professional Rescuer) - a 6.5 hour class provides CPR - adult, child, and infant - plus AED training for those with a duty to respond and/or are in a healthcare profession; focuses on two person CPR, use of a one way valve mask and bag valve mask. $45. Pre-registration is required. Dog First Aid - a two and a half hour class. Tuesday, Feb 17- 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Also, Thursday, April 30 - 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm or Saturday, June 20, 10 am - 12:30 pm. Contact the office or Nichols Career Center 659-3100 for registration information. $25. You receive a Dog First Aid reference guide with dvd. First Aid Basics - First Aid only. No courses scheduled at this time. Please call for information. Challenges (Adult or Child or Infant CPR and/or First Aid) Open to anyone. For certification. You must be able to pass a written test and perform appropriate skills to certification standard without instructor assistance. Pre-registration is required. Please call or email the office to set up an appointment. $25. Course materials are an additional fee and vary depending on materials required. Bloodborne Pathogens - two hour course that teaches how bloodborne pathogens are spread; how to help prevent exposure incidents by following work practice controls, using engineering controls and personal protective equipment, practicing good personal hygiene and properly cleaning and disinfecting equipment and supplies; and how to recognize, report and follow-up on employee exposures to infectious materials. Classes scheduled on an as-needed basis. $10 per person. Youth Classes NEW!! Revised Babysitters Training -- You'll learn to be the best babysitter on the block with training in child care and first aid. Plus, you'll gain the confidence you need to make smart decisions and stay safe in any babysitting situation. You'll receive a Babysitter's Training handbook, Emergency Reference Guide that provides step-by-step instructions to handle common emergencies, and cd-rom that provides the tools you need to run your babysitter's business. 7.5 hours. Classes are held on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. $40 Contact Nichols Career Center for registration information - 573-659-3100. Lifeguard Training - This course teaches the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. This 30 hour course is scheduled as needed and with at least six registered participants. Pre-requisites: must be 15 years of age on or before the last day of the final scheduled session of the class AND successfully complete pre-course test. Pre-course test includes a non-timed 300 yd continuous swim using these strokes in the following order: 100 yds of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick; 100 yds of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence; 100 yds of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke or a mixture of the two strokes; AND a timed 'rescue' - swim 20 yds using front crawl or breaststroke, do a feet first surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, swim back to the starting point with the object, using a propellent kick only, and exit without using ladder or steps in 1 minute 40 seconds. Be sure you have EXCELLENT swimming skills as persons who do not pass the pre-course test will not be able to continue with the lifeguard course. Fees are non-refundable. Fees include training, books and, upon successful completion of the course, lifeguard candidates will receive a one-way valve rescue mask. To receive Lifeguard Training certification, students must attend all class sessions, perform all skills to meet the objectives of each specific skill, demonstrate competency in the three final skill scenarios, and pass a final written exam with a minimum score of 80% on each of the three test sections. Cost of the training is $165. REMINDER: if student is unable to pass the pre-course test, fees will be refunded less a $25 administrative fee. Classes are normally held in April and May, just prior to the summer pool season. Other classes are scheduled during other months on an as-needed basis. Minimum of six students required. NEW!! 2009 Spring Lifeguard Classes - All classes for spring 2009 have been completed. Click on these sites for additional classes in the Capital Area Chapter Region. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Review (appropriate for lifeguards) - Pre-registration is required. $25. Be sure to bring your Lifeguarding Today manual or your CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer participant manual.
